MIS – Management Information system is the relationship study between people, technology, and organization. In simple terms, we can say that it is the use of people, information technology, and the business process to process data, store, and record, and produce the information which helps in making a day-to-day decision by the decision-makers of the organization and helps in business growth.

How MIS differs from coding

MIS concerns not only with coding or writing computer codes. There are multiple of career opportunity of MIS degree that focuses on different aspects which include:

  • Data Analysis
  • Project Management
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Customer Services

Components of MIS

The components of MIS work together to achieve business objects and there are five major components of Management Information System:

  • People
  • Data
  • Hardware
  • Software and
  • Business Processes

People

One of the most important components of MIS is the People – we require them for the operation of all information systems, they are the users who have usually qualified professionals in an organization such as HR executives, accountants, who use the information to record their day-to-day business transactions and achieve goals and help in decision making.

Data

Another important component is Data, which is usually known as unprocessed facts and figures. We could define it as a group of non-random symbols that could be in form of images, text, and others.

Data are raw facts that are organized, structured, and interpreted to create useful information systems. Now here comes the Information which is “data that has processed into a form that is meaningful to the recipient and is of real or perceived value in the current or the prospective action or decision of recipient.” According to Davis and Olson.

Management Information System

Hardware

The physical part of the computer helps in feeding data and displaying the information to help in decision making. Hardware components include various input and output devices. Input devices include- CPU, Keyboard, scanner, etc, and output devices include Monitor, Printer, and so on.

Software

Software is the program that runs on the hardware and speeds up the processing of data into information. The software has two categories:

  • System Software: It is refer to the operating system like Windows, Mac, etc.
  • Application Software: Software that are specialized and used for accomplish business tasks such as banking system, payroll system, etc.

Business Processes

Using the data collected and based on that information the decision and planned and set up the unique ways in which the organization plans and coordinates further activities.
