MBBS is something many students want to pursue after they finish their 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as their subjects. And the ever-increasing number of aspirants, low number of seats available, unaffordable fee structures, and the lack of these and other problems in med schools abroad have led to more and more students moving out of India to chase their dreams of becoming a doctor.
Now, while candidates and parents are usually cautious with the application processes, planning and moving, a few essential details or arrangements might slip your mind.
So, to help you save yourself from making mistakes that you might regret later, here are eight essential things from the MBBS eligibility to the expenses that you should keep in mind while deciding to study abroad:
1. Academic Requirements
Make sure to make thorough inquiries about the academic requirements or MBBS eligibility criteria of the college you plan to apply to. The primary or standard criteria require you to obtain a minimum of 50% aggregate in 12th with PCB as your subjects and a minimum NEET score between 40th to 50th percentile.
2. Age Criteria
The eligibility criteria for MBBS abroad regarding age are also just as essential to be paid attention to as any other factor. The lower age limit to give the NEET-UG is 17, and it is the same for admission in foreign colleges for MBBS.
3. Scholarships
Almost every college offers scholarships to brilliant students and financial aid for students belonging to economically weaker sections. Check them out to ensure you don’t miss out on the much-needed concessions.
4. Living and overall expenses
Apart from the college tuition fees, living expenses in the respective country are also a deciding factor. Therefore, before selecting a college for MBBS, it is better to calculate the accommodation/hostel charges, miscellaneous expenses, and how much you will have to spend months to get an idea if you can afford it or not.
5. College Reputation
This is one of the first things you should check before applying to any foreign medicine college. Mass reviews never lie. Get on the internet and read what the students have said about the med school.
6. Visa process
The student will be required to get a student visa to travel abroad. And, it’s common knowledge that the visa application and approval processes of different foreign countries(they vary) are quite stringy, lengthy, and thus, time-consuming. Therefore, you must get it made well in advance to avoid any last-minute cancellations due to it.
7. English Proficiency test
Do not forget about the English proficiency test included in the MBBS eligibility criteria. You can give TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or OET depending on the requirements and terms of your college abroad.
8. Admission process
Like the visa processes, college admission and application processes are also lengthy and require you to submit several important documents. For a smooth submission, keep these documents ready
- 10th and 12th Marksheets
- School/college leaving certificates
- NEET scorecard
- Resume
- Statement of Purpose
- Letter of recommendation
- Language Proficiency Certificate
- Passport size photographs
Once all of the points from this list have been ticked, you can take a sigh of relief and focus solely on your upcoming journey, MBBS studies and your dream!
