Festival season is here, and one of the most loved Indian festivals is Navratri with Garba, dandiya, fasting, and the beautiful 9 Navratri colors.

Sharad Navratri 2022 is starting on the 26th of September and we already started preparations. I am going to share with you all about this year’s dates, Navratri colors for 9 days, the significance of Sharad Navratri, and the meaning of the 9 Navratri Colors.

Significance of Sharad Navratri

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival falls in the month of Ashvin, usually September or October. There are different stories attached to this festival of victory of good over evil. The word “Navratri” itself depicts about nine nights in Sanskrit, named after the holy period. 

Dussehra or Vijayadashmi and the festival of lights Diwali or Deepawali are followed by Sharad Navratri.

Every nine days has its own significance, this festival is celebrated on the victory of Goddess Durga against the demon Mahishasura. The only festival celebrates the powerful Goddess and her nine avatars. As different nine avatars of Goddess Durga are celebrated so nine colors are associated with each day of Navratri.

It is also marked as the end of the monsoon because falls in the lunar month of Ash

Navratri Day 1: Ghatasthapana, Maa Shailputri

Known as the daughter of the Mountain King Himavat, the first Navdurga of the first day of Navratri. It is believed that the Maa Shailputri gives Shakti to attain higher spiritual growth. She also represents patience and devotion.

Navratri Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini

Signifying bachelorhood and purity, the second day of Navratri is worshipped for Maa Brahmacharini. Maa Brahmacharini is symbolic of love and immense strength.

Navratri Day 3: Maa Chandraghanta 

Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of Navratri, riding the tigress with 10 hands carrying Trishul, Gada, Sword, and Kamandal between her four left hands and holding the fifth left hand at Varada Mudra. She carries the lotus flower, Arrow, Dhanush, and Japa Mala between her four right hands and holds the fifth right hand to Abhaya Mudra.

She gives eternal energy and strength.

Navratri Day 4: Maa Kushmanda 

Dominated by Narayana, Maa Kushmanda guides our heart chakra. It is believed by devotees that Maa Kushmanda gives energy and direction to the sun. Holding Kamandal, Dhanush, Bada, and Kamal in the right hands and Amrit Kalash, Jap Mala, Gada, and Chakra in the left hands in the order she rides on the lioness.

Navratri Day 5: Maa Skandmata 

Maa Shandmata gives immense peace and pleasure to the soul and mind. With four hands wearing lotus flowers in her hands and holding baby Muruga in one of her right hands. The other right hand is Abhaya Mudra. She is also known as goddess Padmasana as she sits on the lotus.

Navratri Day 6: Maa Katyayani 

Katyayani Mata is the 6th Devi to worship in Navratri when girls get dressed as per Navratri colors and it is said that Katyani Mata Mantra is very effective in removing all obstacles such as Manglik Dosha or negative influences of planets in a girl’s horoscope.

 One hand holds a weapon, the other a lotus; the remaining two hands are for granting wishes, Maa Katyayani sitting on a lion with her open four hands to bless the devotees.

Navratri Day 7 Maa Kalratri 

One of the fiercest types of Durgaji, the destroyer of all demon entities, spirits, ghosts, and negative energies. Kalratri means the death of Kaal.  Maa Kaalratri killed the demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Navratri Day 8 Maa Ashtami

Maa Durga was formed by combining the forces of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma to defeat the demon Mahishasura. She gives success, courage, and prosperity and symbolizes strength, morality, and protection.

Navratri Day 9 Maa Siddhidhatri 

On day 9, Navratri devotees, pray to Siddhidatri Mata which is made from the two Sanskrit phrases “Siddhi” because of this perfection while the phrase “datri” means one that presents or bestows.

Maa Siddhidharti bless us with perfection. Lord Shiva got the title of Ardha-Narishwar when Goddess Siddhidatri appeared from his left half and so, she is worshipped by not only humans but also by Deva, Gandharva, Asura, Yaksha, and Siddha.
