Mental Growth of tween to teens
Your child is growing up physically and even mentally, mental growth is something we should never ignore and need to be more attentive during this phase when intensively brain remodeling happens. Now it depends on every child and their development many times, brain development in some kids starts before they hit puberty and some later with their physical changes.
Now, this change or this mental development also known as a Cognitive development so the child’s ability to think and reasoning will grow and it’s different from each age group were at toddler ages between 6 years to 12 years they concentrated on things around, events, addition, sorting and all but as they enter tween to teen i.e. 12 years to 16 years growth is different.
Signs of mental growth
During this adolescence, your kid will develop overall different thinking which we can term as complex thinking or formal logical thinking, now your child develop-
1. Process of thinking- Will try to and get the knowledge of the act of thought process.
2. Learn their own way of communication to convey their decisions.
3. Yes, they will start making up decisions and conveying you with their way of communication.
4. Questions will be many starting from your parental rules, to society rules as they might not like restrictions and rules.
5. Will start looking out for making their identity.
6. In search of their identity, they will make early career decisions.
7. Will develop a habit of debating and questioning rules.
8. You can notice decision-based on following their conscience.
9. In emotional issues, the ability to think complex can cause a problem.
10. Ready to take a high risk or high-risk activities.
Tips for strengthening positive mental growth
Puberty and life experience both develop your kid physically and mentally. Now, it’s time as a parent to support them, guide them, understand them, and let them and their mental growth nourish.
Parenting is not rocket science, but this stage really needs patience and more vigilance.
1. He or she might walk to you with fresh ideas and thoughts, encourage them, listen, and implement if possible in the actual world.
2. Promote excellent thinking skills, compliment and praise them for the same.
3. Support their decision making, let them decide, and learn from their consequences. Might be their decision turns out a positive result. Let them know that you stand by and guide during their decision.
4. Set boundaries, rules which are important and let them know why these rules are set. These boundaries will also teach them skills of negotiating as no one love to live with rules.
5. Return of two letters will be back “NO” and “WHY” but this time they are no more toddlers but both words come with a thought, try to figure out, and clear their doubts.
6. With these two words starts the arguments and now where we need to understand their curiosity and check our patience level.
7. Give them problems and ask their way of approach or solution for the same. Allow them to experiment with a set of boundaries.
8. Support their decision making, let them learn from their decision and its consequences. This will help them learn to make wise decisions and learn.
9. Allow them to test their limits. Thinking out of the box is something to allow them to walk on the path of success as it is said that successful people imagine possibilities.
10. Be a role model, let them learn from your learning and mistakes. Tell them your experiences about moral decisions and set up a role model for your child.
Red flags to watch out for mental illness
Mood swings, change in behavior, are few things we call it as signs of age when toddler steps into the age of tween or teen. But there are a few things we should notice and check if it’s alarming.
1. Unexpected declination in academics.
2. Loss in interest in hobbies and activities.
3. Loss of self-confidence.
4. Change in sleeping pattern, excessive sleeping, lack of sleeping or other sleeping disorder.
5. Change in behavior- excessively rude, aggressive, or introvert.
6. Weight loss.
7. Change in appetite- Overeating or loss of hunger.
8. Lack of energy.
9. Loss of concentration.
10. Having thoughts of death or suicide.
11. Avoiding friends and social life.
12. Actions of self-harm.
There are several common mental health issues, which could be one among all of them like- Anxiety, Teen depression, or any other for which you need to consult your doctor and he will guide you effective recovery program.
Remember, these three things always that-
1. Always keep your communication channel open, constant, and honest.
2. Be attentive to their behavior.
3. Understand that mental health is treatable.
As the journey of tween to teens is full of changes which include physical, emotional, hormonal, sexual, social, intellectual which could be a pressure for some kids but you can handle it with your right approach and right information.
Sleep is a very important minimum of 8-10 hours per day and with so many changes stress is common, so just keep yourself available for them to talk.
The best way to learn how to make the right decision is through life experience and making mistakes. Let them create a series of life experiences to learn how to decide and grow wiser.
