Housefull 1, 2 or 3: Which was the best in the series?

housefull

In Indian cinema, there are two types of genre in comedy; one which is genuinely rib-tickling, and the other which is a masala entertainer filled with puns and confusions. The Housefull movie series falls in the second category, and quite honestly enjoys a large fan base. It has been catering to the needs of movie-goers since 2010.

It features Akshay Kumar in the lead role who is supported by various characters, that keep changing in every franchise. So far, Akshay, Riteish Deshmukh, Boman Irani, and Chunky Pandey have remained constant throughout the series. In Housefull 3 movie, Abhishek Bachchan was one of the supporting heroes, while in Housefull 2, it was John Abraham.

Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, this comedy franchise has done some good business all these years. Here’s a quick recap of all the movies under the Housefull banner:

What worked and didn’t work in all the Housefull movies?

The first Housefull was loved because of a new plot, the multi-starrer star cast formula, and for it being a mass comedy film. Granted that the jokes were mostly PJs and puns, but because it was the first in the series, it fared well with the audience. Aakhri Pasta, played by Chunky Pandey, was an instant hit. The film became a bit too dramatic and serious at some point, thus overlooking the comedy angle.

Housefull 2 movie was better in terms of storyline. The introduction of a fresh star cast also worked very well. However, the performances were quite average and the gags were fewer in number, compared to the first film.

Housefull 3 turned out to be quite predictable, given the kind of jokes which the audience was already exposed to, in the first two films. However, it was the star cast that kept the audience engrossed. The reason why this was not as big a hit as the first two Housefull movies were due to the quality of jokes which dipped drastically, bordering on racism and disabilities. The plot, too, was quite average.
