Basic Adoption Process-1

The wish to adopt a child comes purely from the heart. Yet, other aspects such as the financial, legal and procedural too need to be looked at. Children placed for adoption have no one to speak for them, except the adoption laws and procedures framed to protect them.

Before adopting a child in INDIA, remember to register for adoption with either an Adoption Coordinating Agency (ACA) in each state’s capital city, or an agency certified by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) in New Delhi. CARA is a division of the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

If you adopt from unlicensed orphanages or Children’s Homes, the streets, hospitals, lawyers, doctors or social workers you can get into trouble with the Law.

Fundamental principles governing adoption. – The following fundamental principles shall govern adoptions of children from India, namely, –

(a)     the child’s best interests shall be of paramount consideration, while processing any adoption placement;

(b)     preference shall be given to place the child in adoption with Indian citizens, with due regard to the principle of placement of the child in his own socio-cultural environment, as far as possible.

 Child eligible for adoption. Any orphan or abandoned or surrendered child, declared legally free for adoption by the Child Welfare Committee is eligible for adoption.

  9. My parents tried to adopt years after they had me, but the adoption never came through. A number of people in my life have adopted – many from other countries (Korea, China – I live in the United States). It can be a difficult – and expensive – process. But, almost always, it has been so rewarding.

    1. Ya!! I do understand the process and legal formalities are sometimes not known properly … just trying my bit to share what I learned from the process in INDIA though CARA 🙂

  10. Its high time as a society we encouraged adoption. One of the prime reasons, many dont go for it is the lack of basic information and glad your post details it. Yet, the attitude must change at the grassroot level and once must accept adoption with open arms.
