Arunachalam Muruganantham: Real Padman

Padman

Many of us have seen the Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor starring movie Padman. The story which not only inspired us but made us feel proud of such a wonderful and inspiring person who not only thought and felt the pain of a woman but tried to find a solution for that.

Now, I must admit that I missed to watch it in theatre due to some reason but heard so much great reviews and positive feedback from friends I was quite excited and got a chance to watch PADMAN on ZEE5. The movie was fantastic. The central character is so inspiring, it is difficult to express in words. But then I came to know that the story is real! But who was the real Pad Man?

About Arunachalam Muruganantham:

Based in Coimbatore, Arunachalam is widely known as Padman or Menstrual Man. But despite all the fame, he continues to lead a simple life and is focused towards his mission of providing hygiene during the toughest days in women’s lives.

When he got married, being in a society where taking the name of periods is a taboo in itself, he was unaware of its process and pain. Until he caught her wife hiding blood-drenched cloth piece and questioned her.

She and even all women in his community or villages nearby were so poor to afford a pad and using cloth or other household materials which were totally unhygienic.

When Arunachalam decided to buy pads from the nearest store which was about 17 km away from his place, he realized they are way too expensive for them to buy and use it on a regular basis.

The Padman’s Journey

That’s when he began researching on Menstrual cycles. On realizing the lack of resources that women lacked on this front, Muruganantham decided to make pads which are more hygienic and economical and can be affordable for underprivileged ladies too.

With no woman ready to use his experimental pads, Mr. Muruganantham himself began wearing it for his experiments.

For this, he became known as a shameless man in his community. But this did not stop him and he wore the pads for three months.

As part of the experiment, he used to tie a small bag filled with red colored water around his hips and inserted a pipe through it that made the water drip right onto to the pad, this is done to check the soaking and comfort of his pad.

During these trial periods, he understood the pain and mental pressure of a woman as his pad got wet and left red stains on his white dhoti.

But through continuous efforts, he finally was able to develop a low-cost method of creating sanitary pads. Now, he plans to shares these techniques across India to ensure easy access to sanitary pads.

While she was not supportive of his experiments before, his wife is extremely proud of his achievement in life now as his love for her made him discover something to help every in the society. That’s how an eighth pass Muruganantham, became a globally known inventor who delivers lectures in Harvard University.

Muruganantham is an inspiration to Indian society who busted taboos and worked for the betterment of the society.

There are many taboos attached today also with the Menstrual cycle. Check out how your periods are not your pain it’s all about Period pride.

  11. His low-cost machines that make sanitary pads have earned him international recognition. A Muruganantham’s story has been told on screen as the movie Padman which I havent watched. To the world, he is a social entrepreneur; ‘Pad man’, ‘Menstrual man’; ‘The man who wore a sanitary napkin’: the low-cost sanitary napkin machine that he created is changing the lives of thousands of women across the world. It’s like breaking a massive mountain with a sledgehammer singlehandedly—the stigma surrounding the subject is as such. Which is what makes his story interesting. He is that mad scientist the world may never understand.

  19. I’m from Coimbatore and I’m filled with pride on reading about Muruganandham and his toils and the phenomenal impact he’s had on such an important issue. As you’ve mentioned, sanitary pads and menstruation were all taboo subjects a couple of decades ago. I remember buying sanitary pads from medical shops for the women in my house and the shop guy would wrap the packs with newspaper and then hand it over to me. I never felt ashamed carrying the packs out in the public, but hey social norms were oh so different then. Which makes Mr. Muruganandham’s achievement extra special. Very well written article. Good luck for #MyFriendAlexa
