Adolescent Depression, is very common in today’s teenagers, and this needs to be addressed and shared with more teenage parents. Well, we all are aware of depression, mental illness, bipolar disorder, and their causes, but when we talk about Adolescent Depression which is also termed as teenage depression and it’s way dangerous.

What is the Adolescent Depression?

Medically it is not different from adult depression but, symptoms in teens are differed due to the different social and developmental challenges.

As we know it is directly associated with anxiety, stress and even to suicide. Reason for adolescent depression could be any of the following:

  1. Abuse
  2. Physical changes
  3. School issues
  4. Loss of loved ones
  5. Cyberbullying
  6. Social issue
  7. Other personal problem

Depression is not a simple issue which can be solved by saying “Cheer up” or “Let it go”, this need proper guidance and medication.


There are some signs and symptoms to be watched for teenage symptoms:

  1. Lack of energy and no interest in work.
  2. Don’t want to socialize.
  3. Extreme sensitive about rejection and failure.
  4. Having a sad and irritable mood without any reason.
  5. Feeling of guilt.
  6. Feeling of worthlessness.
  7. Not enjoying the favorite activity and fun games.
  8. Trouble in focusing.
  9. Insomnia or sleeping too much
  10. Poor school performance or frequent absences from school
  11. Less attention to personal hygiene or appearance
  12. Angry outbursts
  13. Making a suicide plan or a suicide attempt

These are few signs you need to keep a watch.

How to help your teenager in Adolescent Depression?

As a parent, it’s your responsibility to first keep an eye on your child and if found these symptoms please make sure to support them without judging by simple things.

  1. Communication is one of the important things you need to have with your young kid. Talk to them about what’s bothering them, let them share their feelings.
  2. Include healthy food and proper rest and exercise.
  3. Stay positive with them and let them have positive connections in school and with friends.
  4. If they share their fear, the problem listens to them without scolding and judging them.
  5. Talk about bullying, which used to be a major issue in the depression of teens.
  6. Breakdown the problem and provide step by solutions to that.
  7. Try to lock up dangerous stuff at home like a knife, ropes, and all just to make sure they don’t pick up thoughts of suicide.
  8. Encourage them for physical activity more than screen time.
  9. Be available for your child.
  10. Consult your doctor to start the right medication on time.

These are few steps as a parent you should take and let them not suffer more in life with adolescent depression.

  1. Good that you touched this area Ruchi. Adolescent Depression should not go neglected. We often tend to ignore it thinking that teenage is the phase when kids want to be with them. But we should have a close watch on their behavior and other actions.
