What is Trekkinng? Trekking is a long journey be undertaken on foot in areas where there are usually no means of transport available. Trekking is not necessarily mountaineering; it is walking for a number of days, usually on uncharted paths, in challenging environments which are likely to be hilly or mountainous.

Few people are always confused between terms Hiking and Trekking, but there is a big difference .

  • Hiking is an outdoor activity of walking in beautiful natural environments on pre-charted paths called hiking trails. There are day hikes and overnight hikes.
  • Trekking is a long journey be undertaken on foot in areas where there are usually no means of transport available. Trekking is not necessarily mountaineering; it is walking for a number of days, usually on uncharted paths, in challenging environments which are likely to be hilly or mountainous.

Once you have decided to go on Trekking here comes few tips for my lovely reader to make this trekking more enjoyable and memorable :

Some pre-trek prep:

  1. Walk walk walk: As trekking is all about walking so, this is first preparation one should definitely do/  The best way to prepare for a long walk? Do long walks. Preferably starting small and building up slowly to the actual length you’ll be trekking on the trip. At the beginning, leave a day in between each walk. But as you improve, try to do back-to-back sessions each day – it’ll help you improve for the relentless nature of a days trek, where you won’t have the luxury of rest days. Minimum you should be able to walk 4-6 hours comfortably before you leave.
  2. Leg-based cardio: leg-based cardio is going to help you prepare. Soccer, football, squash and swimming are all great, but cycling will help build your leg muscles faster. If you’re more of a gym junky, mix up cycling sets with weighted squats and lunges.
  3. Health is very important : When planning your trip, it is advisable to have a medical check up explaining to your physician the altitude you hope to reach. Although not essential, you may prefer protection against cholera, typhoid, tetanus, polio and hepatitis. You may also wish to bring malaria suppressant tablets. Trekkers do occasionally suffer from coughs, colds, minor stomach upsets and, rarely, from mild altitude sickness. Do inform your trek manager of any previous medical problems before you start your trekhiking-backpack.
  4. Your Backpack is lifeline: Don’ forget to keep all essiential things in you backpack. few things to list : >> personal first-aid kit including medication for common ailments such as headaches, dysentery etc.          trekking boots – well broken in and waterproofed
    >> running or tennis shoes
    >> down jacket or equivalent with hood
    >> one heavy wool shirt or sweater
    >> two cotton shirts
    >> one pair cotton trousers or shorts
    >> one pair woollen trousers
    >> one pair shorts or calf-length skirt/culottes for women (skirts are more comfortable and culturally more acceptable)
    >> three pairs of regular underwear
    >> long underwear – thermal or wool
    >> wind- and rain-gear with hood
    >> woollen hat or balaclava
    >> woollen mittens or gloves
    >> woollen socks to wear with boots
    >> cotton socks
    >> toilet kit – including extra toilet paper, towel and soap
    >> flashlight with extra batteries
    >> sunglasses or snow goggles (an extra pair is recommended)
